THANK YOU FOR YOUR BEAUTY, theatre performance co-directed with Just van Bommel (2021) 〰️

ESSAYS AND STORIES

SWEET CORE MEMORIES

During the infamous corona year 2020, Kiriko Mechanicus started baking Therapy Cakes: due to a lack of access to a psychologist, Mechanicus baked her problems into cakes in order to eat them in good company. The purpose of this ritual was to make the problems dissapear.

For Sweet Core Memories, Mechanicus made dessert-shaped translations of the first memory, which are eaten together to experience the sensory feeling of a child’s memory.

How do we get to know each other better by reliving our first memory together?

Kiriko Mechanicus (she/her, 1995) also known as Kiri Academy, is an Amsterdam-based Dutch-Japanese documentary filmmaker, writer of fiction and non-fiction, culinary historian and researcher, photographer, art director, full-time opinionated bitch and part-time party girl.

Her graduation film ‘A TOMATO TRAGEDY’ (2023) was selected for the Nederlands Film Festival and won the Filmfonds Wildcard prize, allowing you to hear more of her in the future. She directs music videos, short documentaries, experimental videos and babbles about cinema endlessly (publicly). Kiriko writes for various literary publications such as Vice magazine, Hard//Hoofd, Brandpunt+ or the Oerol dagkrant. She was once even asked to write a poem for the visit of Italian president Mattarella at the 30-year anniversary of the European Union in the Netherlands. Ain’t that wild! Occasionally, miss Mechanicus appears on the tellie or in a news-pa-per. Professionally, she is down for anything, especially things that she hasn’t done before.
